Naphtha’s Impact on Lacquer or Varnish Coatings

Naphtha is well-known as a solvent for such coatings (in fact, it’s used as a thinner in some paint formulations), so it can soften or dissolve dial lacquer on contact. If the protective lacquer softens, the dial’s surface can become irreparably dull or blotchy, and any printed text on or under the lacquer may be disturbed. Any petroleum-based solvent can activate and softens the lacquer then the dial surface is pretty much done for. Once the clear coat is damaged or removed, the dial paint is exposed and can easily be smeared or oxidized. Vintage dials commonly used Zapon or nitrocellulose varnish, which ages and cracks over time; applying naphtha can cause this brittle varnish to lift off in flakes or melt it into a goo. Indeed, naphtha (lighter fluid) is known to dissolve cellulose-based lacquers, so even a brief exposure can undermine the dial’s finish. Furthermore, the lacquer layer is what dial printing often sticks to – remove or soften the lacquer, and the ink may come off with it. In summary, naphtha will attack the very coating that holds a printed dial together, leading to peeling lacquer and lost print.
Damage Risks for Vintage vs. Modern Dials
Both vintage and modern printed dials are vulnerable to naphtha, but vintage dials tend to be especially fragile. However, “modern” does not equal impervious – many modern luxury watch dials still have a lacquer finish for aesthetic depth, and pad-printed epoxy inks can still be softened by petroleum solvents if given enough contact time. No reputable watch manufacturer expects dial printing to endure direct solvent cleaning. Professionals treat all printed dials as delicate, one-of-a-kind pieces – if ruined, the only fix is a refinish or replacement, which destroys originality and value.
Watchmaker and Manufacturer Warnings
Experienced watchmakers consistently caution against using aggressive cleaners on dials. Even isopropyl alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners are typically too harsh for printed dials. Dial refinishers recommend only rinsing a dial in water if anything, “at the risk of the varnish or even the paint being removed” by solvents. The consensus is that dial cleaning is “fraught with danger” and any method beyond gentle dusting can end in stripped paint.
Notably, manufacturers and service centers also implicitly warn against solvent cleaning of dials. When a dial’s lacquer is damaged, the official solution is often to replace or refinish the dial entirely, rather than attempt to chemically clean it. Alternative Safe Cleaning Methods for Printed Dials
Since naphtha and other solvents are off the table, what can a watchmaker safely do to clean a printed dial? The general approach is “dry” cleaning and utmost caution. Here are some alternative methods and best practices:
- Air Blower for Dust: Start by using a gentle hand-operated dust blower (rubber bulb blower) to puff away loose dust and debris. This removes particles without touching the dial at all. It’s a standard first step in any dial cleaning because it’s non-contact and risk-free.
- Bergeon Adhesive Swabs 7007-2: Stubborn specks or tiny fragments (for example, bits of broken crystal) can be dislodged with these tacky tipped sticks. Always use light pressure and never dig at the dial; instead, roll the tip under the particle carefully. This technique is effective for things like loose lume fragments or coagulated grime. These are other similar sticks produced but I have not tested them so make sure you test them in a inconspicuous place.
- Rodico Putty: Rodico should be avoided at all costs for dial cleaning. Mostly because even clean rodico can leave a tacky residue behind which does nothing but attract dust.
- Mild Water-Based Cleaning (Spot Only): If a dial has grime that dry methods can’t shift (for example, the safest liquid is plain water or very mild soapy water. Use Deionized water (to avoid mineral spots) plus a tiny drop of a mild dish detergent (Liquinox) if needed, applied with a soft artist’s brush or a cotton bud. Do not immerse the dial; instead, dampen the swab or brush and gently dab a small, inconspicuous area first to test that the paint isn’t affected. Many watchmakers skip soap entirely and just use water on a cotton pad to dab away a surface stain. Any wet contact should be minimal in time – no soaking – and followed immediately by drying with the air blower. Keep in mind that even water can penetrate some dial paints if left too long. Always remember that moisture can undermine varnish and printing if overdone, so use water sparingly.
- Soft Brushes and Detergent – Last Resort: In professional settings, a very soft dial brush (camel hair or similar) can be used lightly with a heavily diluted detergent solution to reduce yellowed varnish or surface staining. This is essentially trying to clean the lacquer itself. However, this step “requires extreme caution as it can damage the lacquer” – many dials have been ruined by overzealous scrubbing even with mild soap. If attempted, the watchmaker will make only a few light passes and constantly check that no print is coming off on the brush. For most vintage dials, even this mild cleaning isn’t recommended unless the dial is practically unreadable and you accept the risk.
- Leave It Be / Professional Restoration: Often, the safest “cleaning” is to do nothing more than dusting and light dabbing. A dial with a bit of patina or aging is usually best left as-is; aggressive cleaning attempts cause more harm than good. If a dial is severely corroded or the lacquer has degraded to a point that the dial is unattractive, the solution is not DIY solvent cleaning – it is either to hand it to a dial restoration specialist or to find a replacement dial. Restoration experts can strip and reapply lacquer and even repaint dial markings, but this is essentially refinishing the dial (with associated loss of originality). That route is typically chosen only when the dial is beyond gentle cleaning. If you have any doubt, do not touch the dial. Protect it from cleaning solutions and focus only on cleaning the movement. In standard watch servicing, the dial and hands are removed before the movement goes into cleaning solvents – this avoids any contact between the dial and harsh chemicals.
By following these safer methods, one can tidy up a dial’s appearance without the high risk that comes with naphtha or other solvents. The key principles are gentleness, minimal moisture, and testing. In all cases, avoid scrubbing – any rubbing action can abrade printed details or hairline the lacquer. Remember that a partial improvement is better than a total loss: many watch dials have been partially cleaned only to look worse because the cleaner couldn’t reach under indices or around text, creating uneven clean patches.
