Pin gauges are available in both metric and imperial sets, and in several tolerance grades like Class ZZ ±0.0002” to ±0.0004” depending on the pin gauge size, see figure 1 and Class Z, ±0.0001” to ±0.0002” depending on the pin gauge size for imperial sizes.

Metric Pin gauges have tolerances for ZZ grade gauges of .00508mm and Grade Z gauges have a manufacturing tolerance of .00254mm, see figure 2, with even more precise classes used in high-end metrology labs. For watchmaking ZZ and Z manufacturing tolerances are more than enough.

Here’s what you need to know when using pin gauges:

  • Basic pin gauge sets typically range from 0.10 mm to 2.00 mm in 0.05 mm increments.
  • You can find pin gauge sets that increase in 0.01 mm steps but they are incredibly expensive.
  • Jewel hole clearance should usually be around 0.01 to 0.02 larger than the pivot.
  • The correct gauge will slide in with just a bit of friction—too loose means the hole is worn.
  • Use under magnification (loupe or microscope) for accurate feedback.
  • Class ZZ tolerance (+0.00508mm) is more than enough for most watch work.
  • Pin gauges don’t measure depth—only diameter and fit.
  • Clean both the pin and the hole with peg wood or pith wood before testing fit.

Pin gauges can be very expensive. I found a set on AliExpress that I purchased for around $40 that goes from  .1 to 5.00mm with a listed tolerance of ±0.001mm- see figure 3. We will see and I will update this once i receive them.

What about gauges under .1 mm

Ultimately, the ability to measure jewel holes is a fundamental skill that will enhance your watch repair capabilities.

I have not found any pin gauges under a tenth of a millimeter, so what I have always done is either made what I needed on the lathe or use an old balance pivot. When I replaced a broken staff, I would save them and use the good side as a pin gauge by mounting the broken end of the staff into a small piece of peg wood- see figure 4. I would then just measure the staff and use a label maker to make a small label to wrap around the peg wood. Before you know it, you will have quite a collection of small pin gauges.

Some History, and Tips

Did you know that in the old days, watch factories used pin gauges to hand-match balance jewels to specific pivots?

Some vintage balance jewel assortments were labeled in 0.01 mm steps. Pin gauges were also used alongside broaches to bring holes to exact sizes before installing jewels or bushings.

Some brands color-code their gauge sets for fast size selection.
